Baruch Atah: I Don’t Know
Blessed Are You If You Don’t Know
Baruch atah I don’t know 2x
Please help me, find my way
back to You, back to You
Please help me, find my way
back to You, in love, and service, and joy.
May I find the meaning I seek
the connection with You so deep
and express it all to the world
with your love, and blessing, and guidance.
Baruch atah I don’t know 2x
Please help me, find my way
back to You, back to You
Please help me, find my way back to You,
in love, and service, and joy.
Help release control
surrender to You
and enjoy the mystery ride, called Life.
Baruch baruch atah, I don’t know, Adonai, I don’t know
Baruch baruch atah, I don’t know, Adonai, I have no idea.
May you help me, find my way
back to you, back to you…
Please help me, find my way back to You, to You, to You.
My friend Shelley Barchanowitz Goldberg taught me the words of this prayer. The traditional Jewish blessing formula begins Baruch atah Adonai (Blessed are You, God — literally Our Master). Because Adonai sort of rhymes with “I don’t know,” the blessing becomes “Baruch atah I don’t know (Blessed are You, I don’t know).
There have been so many times in my life when I have felt lost, and had and have no idea of what is coming next in my work and in life, and the mystery and lack of knowing often overwhelms me. The lesson that came from chanting these words, is that the only thing I can rely upon is strengthening my connection to God. It is this connection that will lead me to a place of knowing, even if it’s only for a moment. So connection is key, as is release, surrender, and a little sprinkling of joy. Blessed are you, if you don’t know.
