Connecting Earth to Heaven
Make Me an Altar of Peace
Make me an altar of earth
with peace and purity too
in every place where my name is called
I will come to you 2x
and I will bless you in the name of the One 2x.

The mystical branch of Judaism, Kabbalah, states “as above so below….”
Our words, actions, behaviors, energy, what we eat, how we think, are all related to the heavenly realm and vice versa.
Exodus 20:21 states: Make for me an altar of earth and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your sacrifices of well-being, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be mentioned I will come to you and bless you.
With the inspiration of commentary by Rabbi Yael Levy in her book Directing the Heart, the words of this chant came to me with abundant grace. They offer the promise of a heavenly connection in this earthy realm, and personally brings me a sense of hope, peace and love.
I have interpreted burnt offerings as “purity” since when you burn something you purify it. The offering of “well-being” in Hebrew is related to the word shalom and so I used the word peace along with purity. The blessing from the One came from Rabbi Levy’s book.
What I feel when I chant these words is the possibility that in every moment and in every way we live, we are making an altar of earth here on earth for God’s name to dwell. If we can do this deeply and with intensity and regularity and integrity, then we are calling forth God’s name and God will come to us and bless us in the Name of The One.
May this blessing be bestowed upon each of us, in every cell and fiber of our being… so that the Being of Oneness dwells inside us and radiates out to all those whom we encounter on our earth walk.
