God Is With You
Genesis 39:3
Kee Havaya eto; v’kol asher-hu asah mazli’ah b’yado
For Beingness/Presence is with you; and in all you do,
It causes success in your hand.
The biblical character Joseph has an arduous journey. He is placed in a pit by his jealous brothers, sold as a slave and ends up becoming vizier to Pharaoh. In Parshat Toldot, at the beginning of his sojourn to Egypt this text tells us that God is with Joseph and provides success in all his endeavors (also stated in 39:2). Later we learn that Joseph believed that God was with him all along the way. What if we were to live our lives as if God/Beingness/Presence/Source of Life were with each of us all the time?
Steve Jobs is quoted as saying: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something-your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
What if our trust/belief was in God? So when we feel like we are in a pit, might we see it in the larger context of the journey of our lives? Might we be able to step back and consider the perspective of heaven as we live our lives on Earth?
What if God is with us like with Joseph, wanting to support us as best as we will allow?
May we feel the support that our ancestor Joseph had directly, and with this support may the heaven on earth perspective grant us some relief from the daily trials and tribulations of being a spiritual being in an earthly body.
