From the time I was 13 and experienced the tragedy of my father and brother’s death in a small plane crash, I have been asking the same question for close to 50 years now… what is my purpose in life? If life can be cut off in a moment in time, then what are we supposed to be doing with, as Mary Oliver says, “Our one wild and precious life.”

So one time in particular when I was feeling purposeless, and lost along the way of making meaning in my life, these words came to me, to help guide me. The Hebrew word Makom means place, and it also is another name for God. This aspect of this name for God is a grounded one: God as the place holder, the comforter, the grounded one, the energy that is stable and foundational. In fact it is this name of God that we use when we offer words of comfort to a mourner, we say *Hamakom yinachem etchem… ” This literally means “May the Place/God offer you comfort.” In other words, “May you be comforted.”

For those who, like me, may be lost along the way from time to time, or just want to find greater and deep meaning in their lives, this is the prayer of asking to find one’s place in the world. Ultimately, one’s place in this world is temporary, and as the chant indicates, each of us has a place with the ultimate Source who holds a place for each of our hearts and souls.

*Mourners sit on the ground or in special low stool close to the ground and close to the foundational energy of the energy at a time when they may be feeling lost.
