Protection: I Am Your Shield

Genesis 15:1

I am your shield in Hebrew
Al tirah, al tirah, anochi magen lach
‘Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be exceeding great.’
Al tirah, al tirah, anochi magen lach 2x
Do not be afraid, I am Your shield. 2x

During turbulent times and even in the challenges and difficulties of everyday life, we look for protection, holding and support. In Parshat Lech Lecha, Avram is beckoned to leave all that he knows and to embark upon a journey with little security. God tells him not to fear, that God will be his shield, his protection. This melody evokes the safety and protection of a lullaby and the feelings we might have experienced as babies in the protective arms of our parents. Like a parent, God is the Source of our creation and is cradling us in God’s arms. The Jewish star of David is also known as the Magen David, and was thought to have mystical magical powers of protection. There are 2 versions of this chant. One is a more general call not to be afraid. and the second inserts one’s own name to call out personally in place of “Avram “in the verse.
